Greyhound Friends of New Jersey

Since 1986–over 30 years–Greyhound Friends of New Jersey (GFNJ) has been, and continues to be, dedicated to helping former racing greyhounds transition from their careers at the track to loving homes where they can live out their retirements being loved (and loving right back). Thousands of Greyhounds Helped Home with More on the Way GFNJ never says “no” to welcoming a greyhound; we are known for taking dogs in who need medical care for the short-term, like an injury, and those who need chronic illness care. In addition, we run an award-winning prison foster program that’s beneficial to the dogs and inmates who so beautifully care for the dogs. Because of our work, thousands of greyhounds have found their ways to adopters who love them. Of course, all of this takes time, dedication, volunteers, and money. By participating in 5k for Greys, you will be taking an important role in helping more greyhounds find homes.

Pedaling 4 Paws

In early 2009, Viktor Ohnjec planned a long-distance ride from West Chester, PA to his parent’s home in Montreal, Quebec. A short time later, Viktor recruited a fellow cyclist, Mike Van Ryn to ride along with him. Mike’s brother, a local business owner, caught wind of their adventure and offered to pledge a dollar to the local SPCA for every mile Mike rode. The ride quickly gained the attention of the local cycling community, the media and residents and soon more money came in on behalf of the ride. Eventually, nearly $2000 was raised to benefit the Chester County SPCA with the help of many friends who contributed. Not bad considering this was not a charity ride. In the years since, Viktor and Mike have continued to ride and have consistently grown the number of cyclists participating in the event each year. And they have added a number of local businesses who act as collection points for a growing number of supported local SPCA/shelter along the route. Last year more then 25 riders completed the entire course with another 100+ riders joining for a portion. But most important of all, everyone who rides and who is involved helps to provide and care for the stray or neglected animals living at their local SPCA or Animal Rescue/Shelter. The result – since 2009 over $100,000 in donations has been received and from a broader audience! For 2015, Pedaling4Paws is expanding even further and will coordinate additional rides in Colorado, Florida, New York, and also virtual rides for those unable to join a ride. For more information about Pedaling4Paws and how you can apply to ride, or support a ride, please visit our website at www.pedaling4paws.org

The Hope Express

The Hope Express was founded in 2006 for the purpose of raising awareness of pediatric cancer, raising funds to help children and their families fight pediatric cancer, and to bridge the gap between the pediatric cancer patients and families on the 7th floor at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA and the Dancers at the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (aka THON). THON is a year round fundraising event benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund, Conquering Childhood Cancer. The largest event for The Hope Express, and the inspiration for the organizations name, is a 135 mile relay race like non-other. Through the early evening, night and most of the next day, teams of runners brave the cold, February weather and slopes of the Appalachian Mountains between Hershey, PA and State College, PA, to arrive in time for the start of the THON dance marathon. Since the intent of the run has always been a symbolic way of tying the families and activities at the Medical Center to THON, the runners are past PSU Alumni who were heavily involved in THON while attending PSU, and past patients and their family members. While many pediatric cancer patients attend THON each year, there are many families who are not be able to attend THON because their children are too sick to leave the hospital. This run is a way for those families to express their regards to the kids at THON by sending a note or a letter, thus the name The Hope Express, based on the Pony Express that ran tirelessly from point A to point B just to deliver a message. So too the Express runners carry those messages from the kids in Hershey to the dancers in State College, to deliver cards and letters generated by the pediatric cancer patients.

Messiah College Swimming

Pursuing Athletic Excellence … Developing Christian Character These are the two goals for which Messiah Athletics is known. Doing one without doing the other is not good enough at Messiah, we hold each other accountable to meeting these goals. Pursuing Athletic Excellence is important, but equally important is the way we compete. As we work at developing character, how do our student-athletes carry themselves during competition? How do they do in the classroom? Are our athletes serious students? Do they demonstrate sportsmanship as they compete? Does their faith impact the way they approach the game? Developing Christian Character is every bit as important to us. The Men's and Women's Swim Teams at Messiah strive to be the best while developing Christian character and living it in their daily lives and through their competitive performances.
